Overview
Mavoko Municipality, often referred to by its industrial center, Athi River, is a critical component of the Nairobi Metropolitan Region, strategically located about 28 kilometers southeast of the capital in Machakos County. Its proximity to Nairobi and major transport infrastructure—the Mombasa Road, the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), and the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)—defines its immense economic value.
Population
The area has experienced explosive demographic growth. While the core Athi River town population was recorded at 81,302 (2019 Census), the larger Mavoko Municipality (encompassing fast-growing residential areas like Syokimau and Mlolongo) had a population of 258,498 (in a previous municipal definition) and is currently one of the fastest-growing residential and labor catchment areas for the metropolis.
Economy
Mavoko is primarily known as one of Kenya’s most significant industrial and logistics hubs. Its economy is heavily skewed toward heavy and light manufacturing, specifically cement production (hosting multiple major factories), steel milling, and other industrial processing plants. Crucially, Mavoko is home to the Athi River Export Processing Zone (EPZ), the largest public EPZ in Kenya. This zone facilitates export-oriented industries, particularly in apparel, attracting significant foreign investment and providing tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs, making Mavoko an indispensable engine for Kenya’s national manufacturing and export output.
