Overview
Kikuyu is a historic and rapidly urbanizing municipality located in Kiambu County, making it a pivotal component of the greater Nairobi Metropolitan Region. Situated approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Nairobi’s central business district, Kikuyu has transitioned from a colonial missionary settlement to one of Kenya’s most important residential and logistical hubs.
Population
Kikuyu Municipality is a highly populated urban area, recorded at 323,881 residents in the 2019 Census. Its continuous population surge is primarily driven by its close proximity to Nairobi and its superior infrastructure connectivity, including the dual-carriage highway and the recently completed Southern Bypass. This accessibility has made Kikuyu a highly desirable, relatively affordable residential destination for professionals and families who work in the capital.
Economy
The local economy is characterized by a blend of old and new economic drivers:
- Agriculture and Real Estate: Due to its fertile soil, traditional economic activities like livestock and crop farming (especially horticulture and cash crops) remain significant. However, the dominant economic boom is now centered on real estate and service provision. The high demand for housing has made land and property investment extremely lucrative.
- Logistics and Industry: Its strategic location along the Mombasa–Malaba Railway Line and the Southern Bypass (of which Kikuyu is the sole urban center) positions it as a growing hub for transport and logistics. Additionally, the municipality hosts a growing industrial sector, including a notable pharmaceutical factory (Universal Corporation), contributing to job creation and economic diversification in the Kiambu County metropolitan cluster.
