Introduction

Uasin Gishu County is a high-altitude county in Kenya’s former Rift Valley Province, widely known as the country’s breadbasket and the epicenter of its athletic prowess. Its capital and only major urban center is Eldoret, a large, fast-growing commercial town that serves as the economic hub for the North Rift region. The county sits on a plateau, providing vast, fertile lands that are ideal for large-scale agriculture.

The economy is primarily driven by large-scale grain farming, especially wheat and maize, as well as dairy farming. Beyond agriculture, Uasin Gishu is globally famous as the “Home of Champions”. Its high altitude provides the perfect training conditions for long-distance runners, and the county has produced a remarkable number of world-record holders and Olympic champions, making towns like Iten (in neighboring Elgeyo-Marakwet) and Kapsabet (in neighboring Nandi) part of its extended athletic ecosystem.
