Introduction
Siaya County is located in western Kenya, bordering the northeastern shore of Lake Victoria. Its administrative capital is Siaya town, with other key centers including Bondo and Ugunja. The county’s landscape is characterized by rolling hills and lowlands that slope gently towards the lake, and it encompasses several islands, including Mageta Island. It is a key part of the Lake Victoria basin, a region with significant economic and ecological importance.
The economy is primarily based on subsistence agriculture and fishing, with maize, millet, and cassava being the main crops. Culturally, Siaya is a heartland of the Luo community, rich in tradition and heritage. The county holds a unique place in modern history as the ancestral home of the Odinga political dynasty and, most famously, as the location of the homestead of Barack Obama Sr., the father of the 44th President of the United States.
