Nakuru

Nakuru is Kenya’s newest and fourth officially recognized city, a status it attained in December 2021. Located in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, approximately 160 km northwest of Nairobi, Nakuru serves as the economic and administrative capital of the vast Rift Valley region and is one of Kenya’s most important secondary urban centers.

Nakuru is the largest city in the Rift Valley and one of the fastest-growing cities in East Africa. As of the 2019 census, the urban population stood at 570,674, with projections showing rapid growth toward one million residents by 2030. The wider Nakuru County is the third most populous in Kenya, underscoring the city’s role as a densely settled regional hub.

The economy of Nakuru is robust, consistently ranking among the top four counties in Kenya for its contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or Gross Value Added (GVA), often accounting for around 5% to 6% of the total. Its economic strength is built on three pillars:

  1. Agriculture and Agro-processing: Nakuru is the undisputed hub for the country’s central agricultural heartland. Its economy is deeply rooted in the processing and trade of crops like maize, wheat, potatoes, and dairy products from its rich volcanic soils, hosting major grain mills and agro-based manufacturing industries.
  2. Manufacturing and Industry: The city is a key industrial center outside the Nairobi Metropolitan Area, designated by the government to play an increasing role in the country’s industrialization efforts.
  3. Tourism: Nakuru is a major tourism destination, largely due to its proximity to the iconic Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for its flamingos and as a rhino sanctuary, as well as the geothermal wealth and scenic beauty of the Rift Valley.
