Introduction
Kitui County is a county in Kenya’s former Eastern Province. Its capital is Kitui town, with Mwingi being another major urban center. The county borders seven other counties: Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Embu, Machakos, Makueni, Tana River, and Taita-Taveta. Geographically, Kitui is an arid and semi-arid region, which makes it representative of about 80% of Kenya’s landmass. This environment is characterized by high poverty levels, agro-pastoralism, and significant vulnerability to climate shocks like droughts, which can lead to conflicts over natural resources.
