Introduction
Kisumu County is located in western Kenya, strategically positioned on the shores of the Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria. Its capital, Kisumu City, is the third-largest city in the country and serves as the principal commercial, industrial, and transportation hub for the entire Western Kenya region. The city’s history is deeply tied to the lake, having been established as a key inland port for the Uganda Railway, a role it continues to play today.
The county’s economy is anchored by the Port of Kisumu, which facilitates trade with neighboring Uganda and Tanzania. Fishing and agriculture are also vital, with the Kano Plains being a major center for rice and sugarcane farming. Culturally, Kisumu is a vibrant heartland for the Luo community, known for its lively music, delicious cuisine (especially fish), and attractions like the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary and Dunga Beach, which offers stunning lakeside sunsets.
