Introduction
Bungoma County is a populous agricultural county located in the western region of Kenya, sharing a border with Uganda. Its capital and largest urban center is Bungoma town, while Webuye is another major industrial and commercial hub, known for its paper milling industry. The county is characterized by a rolling green landscape with fertile soils, making it one of the country’s key food-producing regions.
The economy is heavily reliant on agriculture, with sugarcane being the primary cash crop, alongside extensive cultivation of maize, beans, and sweet potatoes for subsistence. Bungoma is a cultural heartland for the Luhya community, particularly the Bukusu sub-tribe, who are known for their vibrant and elaborate circumcision ceremonies, which are a significant cultural event. The county is also home to several scenic attractions, including the foothills of Mount Elgon.
