Introduction
Kericho County is located in the highlands of southwestern Kenya, famous for its vast, rolling hills of vibrant green tea plantations. Its capital is Kericho town, the heart of Kenya’s most important tea-growing region. The area’s high altitude and consistent rainfall create the perfect conditions for tea cultivation, resulting in a stunning landscape that appears to be covered in a lush green carpet year-round.
The county’s economy is overwhelmingly dominated by the tea industry, hosting huge estates owned by multinational companies like Unilever and James Finlay, alongside numerous small-scale farmers. This makes Kericho one of the world’s largest producers of black tea. Culturally, it is the homeland of the Kipsigis people, a sub-group of the Kalenjin community. Beyond tea, the county is also known for the Mau Forest, a critical water tower for the region.
