Overview
Thika is a large, rapidly growing industrial town and municipality located in Kiambu County, roughly 42 kilometers northeast of Nairobi. Historically established as a colonial farming post, its transformation has been driven by its strategic location along major transport corridors, earning it the moniker, the “Industrial Town” of Central Kenya.
Population
According to the 2019 National Census, Thika had an urban population of 279,429. However, its rapid growth continues as part of the expanding Nairobi Metropolitan Region. Thika attracts a constant influx of residents due to its proximity to the capital via the Thika Superhighway, as well as its robust internal job market, making it a critical overflow and residential hub for the greater Nairobi area.
Economy
Thika is globally recognized as a leading industrial and agro-processing center. Its economy is heavily invested in manufacturing, hosting over 50 major factories and approximately 100 small-scale industries. Key economic activities include:
- Agricultural Processing: Large-scale fruit canning (notably pineapples from the surrounding areas), coffee processing, and oil refining (headquarters of Bidco Oil Refineries).
- Heavy and Light Industry: Textiles, motor vehicle assembly, chemical manufacturing, and packaging.
Thika’s highly developed manufacturing base and its function as a commercial gateway to the Mt. Kenya region solidify its position as one of Kenya’s most economically powerful municipalities outside the four chartered cities.
