Introduction
Kisii County is a densely populated and agriculturally productive county located in the western highlands of Kenya, in the country’s former Nyanza Province. Its capital and commercial hub is Kisii town. The region is characterized by a very hilly terrain with a cool, wet climate and fertile red volcanic soils, which together create a lush, green landscape that supports intensive farming throughout the year.
The county’s economy is overwhelmingly dominated by agriculture, and it’s particularly famous for being one of the leading producers of bananas in Kenya. It also produces significant quantities of maize, beans, and avocados. Kisii is the heartland of the Gusii people, and it is culturally renowned for its unique soapstone carvings, which are handcrafted by local artisans and sold both locally and internationally, making it a significant cultural export.
