Introduction
Nyamira County is a densely populated and agriculturally intensive county located in the western highlands of Kenya. Its administrative capital is Nyamira town. The county is characterized by its steep, rolling hills and exceptionally high rainfall, which results in a lush, green landscape year-round. This topography, while scenic, presents unique challenges for infrastructure and farming.
The economy of Nyamira is almost entirely dependent on agriculture. It is one of Kenya’s most significant producers of tea, with small-scale farms covering much of the landscape. The county is also famous for its bananas, which are a staple food and a major source of income for residents. Nyamira is a cultural heartland for the Gusii (also known as Kisii) community, known for their vibrant traditions and industrious farming practices.
