Overview
Eldoret, recently conferred city status, is a major economic hub situated on the fertile Uasin Gishu Plateau in the highlands of the Great Rift Valley. Known as the “Home of Champions” due to its high altitude and the large number of world-class athletes it produces, Eldoret is one of Kenya’s fastest-growing and most strategically important secondary cities.municipality.
Population
With a population of 475,716 (2019 Census), Eldoret ranks as the fifth most populated urban center in Kenya, a figure that continues to grow rapidly due to rural-to-urban migration. Beyond its permanent residents, Eldoret serves a large regional population and hosts one of the largest university student populations outside of Nairobi, with institutions like Moi University and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) contributing to its intellectual and professional class.
Economy
Eldoret’s economy is anchored in two main pillars:
- Agribusiness and Manufacturing: Surrounded by Kenya’s most productive farmlands, Eldoret is the nation’s “breadbasket” and a central trading post for large-scale grain (maize and wheat), dairy, and horticultural farming. This agricultural dominance has fostered a strong manufacturing sector focused on agro-processing, including flour milling, food processing, and textile industries (like Rivatex).
- Services and Logistics: The city is a strategic regional transport and logistics node, featuring the Eldoret International Airport and serving as a crucial rail and road link for trade toward Uganda and the wider East African region. Investments by successful athletes in real estate and local businesses further stimulate its burgeoning service and retail sectors.
